Today, I’m going to recommend what I believe are the 3 BEST protein powders for the ketogenic diet. I’m NOT going to be recommending the mainstream powders that are labeled specifically for keto because a lot of these have additives. To be honest, we don’t need all that extra junk. If you’re simply looking for a quality protein powder, check these out. Maybe I’ll even save you a few bucks!
Some of the proteins we eat are complete sources. Some of them are not. A complete source contains all 9 essential amino acids. Your body needs to get ALL of these from the different foods you eat.
Since we limit our protein intake on the ketogenic diet, it is even MORE important to make your protein sources count. The protein powders that I recommend below are ALL complete proteins.
For some of us, protein supplementation is necessary. If you’re trying to put on weight or focus on maintaining lean muscle mass, protein powder is great. It’s also great for increasing levels of glutathione in the body. Glutathione is our chief anti-oxidant. [*]
Protein powders come in all shapes and sizes and you should be picky about the kind that you buy. That’s why I did the work for you up front and found the BEST protein powders for the ketogenic diet.
So, let’s get to it…
What makes a protein powder really AWESOME? I’ve done my research and I have my list. 9 different things made the cut.
What Makes a Protein Powder Great?
Regarding artificial sweeteners, stevia and monk fruit may be okay in protein powders. Other artificial sweeteners such as sucralose have been linked to gut microbiome issues. [*](amongst other issues)
If you’d like to flavor your protein, I would recommend making a smoothie with berries and cinnamon (controls insulin spike).
There are 3 proteins that I found to fit the list pretty well. I’ve divided them into 3 specific categories depending on what is most important to YOU.

Option 1 – Best Protein Powder for the Ketogenic Diet Overall
Grass-Fed Whey Protein Isolate by Opportuniteas
This protein powder hit every single one of my requirements and the price is reasonable. This is an isolated protein and is great for someone looking to avoid lactose due to either lactose intolerance or a food sensitivity. Isolate proteins are up to 90% pure protein and have a higher amount of protein per serving.
If you are looking for the highest quality protein for keto, opportuniteas whey protein is going to be hard to beat.
Cost per gram of protein is about 5 cents (2.5lb package).
"Ok, so I have tried many other similar products... Even the ones that are supposed to be zero carbs, etc.. This is my only go to from now on...Why? Let's start with the simplest ingredients list... Nothing hidden to throw you out of ketosis.. Mixing /blending is easy. Awesome product!"
Option 2 – Best Protein Powder for the Ketogenic Diet on a Budget
Pure Whey by Pure Label Nutrition
For someone looking for the best “bang for your buck keto protein” I would recommend going with PureWhey. It comes at a really good price point for the value it delivers. There are a few notable differences with this whey protein.
Perhaps the biggest difference is that this is NOT an isolate whey protein. This means that it is going to have some dairy proteins in it. If you are lactose intolerant, you’ll want to be aware of this.
It also does NOT contain the lecithin ingredient which helps with easy mixing. So, it may not mix as well as other proteins, but I don’t think this should affect your selection. Pure whey is whey protein in its NATURAL form which is awesome.
Cost per gram of protein is about 3 cents. (5 lb container)

“A+++. This is the best unflavored pure whey protein on the market. It blends easily with most foods with no clumping or aftertaste. Yesterday I added some to my Oikos Triple Zero Greek Yogurt and BAM my protein jumped to 39 grams! I am super excited to try in my clean eating savory recipes. If you want to ”pump up“ your protein intake in your meals, this is the one to try! I have already recommended it to all my clients!”
Option 3 – Best Protein Powder for the Ketogenic Diet as a Vegan
Premium Pea Protein Isolate by NorCal Organic
If you are vegan, you may have noticed that it is difficult to find a quality plant-based protein. Pea Protein is a great option since it is a complete protein containing all 9 essential amino acids. The downside with pea protein is that it often comes from unreliable sources in places like China. This is one of the reasons why it is normally a cheaper protein.
Source Organic – Premium Pea Protein Isolate is sourced from organic Canadian farms. Its considerably more expensive than other pea proteins, but you are getting a natural product that only contains pea protein. As you will find, just about every other pea protein contains many additives.
Cost per gram of protein is about 5 cents (2lb package)
"This product is more expensive than similar ones on Amazon because when you do the research you find out that this one is the only brand that sources the product from Canadian organic farms only. And not China or other countries. This is super creamy and doesn’t have that gritty texture of some pea proteins. All around a great product that I will be repurchasing."
